Online Restaurant Booking in Bangkok: App, Website or LINE?

5 October 2026 · by Yunmin Shin

How Do Restaurants in Bangkok Take Online Bookings?

Bangkok restaurants take online reservations in three ways: through a third-party booking platform, through a booking form on their own website, or through a booking app inside LINE. Most successful places end up using two of them: a platform for discovery by new guests, and their own channel — usually LINE — for regulars and repeat bookings, where paying per booking makes no sense.

Here is how each option works, what it really costs, and how to choose.

Option 1: Third-Party Booking Platforms

Reservation platforms and marketplace apps list your restaurant alongside others and handle the booking for you.

What you get: discovery. People browsing the platform for "somewhere for Friday dinner" can find you. Setup is fast and there is nothing to build.

What it costs: typically a per-booking or per-guest fee, a subscription, or both, depending on the platform and your contract. The key point is that the fee applies to every booking — including your regulars, who would have booked anyway.

What you give up: the customer relationship. The guest's contact details and booking history live on the platform, which also shows them your competitors.

Option 2: Booking on Your Own Website

A booking form or calendar on your own restaurant website.

What you get: no per-booking fee, your own guest data, and a booking page that ranks for your own name and searches like "online restaurant booking [your area]". It is also the page you link from Google Maps, Instagram and your LINE OA.

What it costs: a one-time build. The quality varies enormously — a contact form that emails the manager is not a booking system. A real one checks availability and confirms instantly.

Watch out for: a booking widget that only works on desktop, or one that asks the guest to create an account. Both kill mobile bookings.

Option 3: A LINE Booking App (LIFF)

In Thailand, the "restaurant booking app" that actually gets used is not one guests download from an app store. It is a LINE LIFF mini-app: a booking web app that opens inside LINE from your restaurant's LINE Official Account.

The guest taps "Book a table" in your rich menu, chooses date, time and party size, and gets an instant confirmation in the chat. Because they are already logged in to LINE, there is no sign-up, and their reminder arrives in the same chat a day before. Staff manage everything from a simple web dashboard.

This is the option most worth considering if your regulars already message you on LINE to book — which, for a lot of Bangkok restaurants, is most of them. We explain the technical side in our LINE LIFF development guide.

What Makes a Restaurant Booking System Actually Work?

The difference between a booking system that fills tables and one that annoys staff is in the details:

  • A realistic capacity model. Decide whether you book by table or by covers per time slot, and set a turn time per party size. A two-top and a table of eight do not take the same 90 minutes.
  • Instant confirmation. If the guest has to wait for a human reply, it is a request form, not a booking system.
  • Rules for big groups and peak nights. Route parties above a set size to a manual approval or a deposit.
  • A one-tap cancel. People who can cancel easily release tables; people who can't simply don't show up.
  • Reminders. A LINE message the day before and a few hours before. This is where most no-show reduction comes from.
  • A dashboard staff will use. Today's bookings, walk-in capacity left, and guest notes ("anniversary", "allergic to peanuts"), readable on a tablet at the host stand.

How to Cut No-Shows

No-shows are the hidden cost of free online booking. The tools that work:

  1. Reminders on LINE, not email — Thai guests read LINE.
  2. Easy cancellation from the reminder itself.
  3. Deposits for large or peak bookings, taken by PromptPay QR at booking time and refunded or deducted on the night. See PromptPay QR payment integration.
  4. A guest history, so staff can see who has missed bookings before.

Getting Bookings From Google Maps

Many "online restaurant reservation" searches end on Google Maps. Make sure your Google Business Profile has your booking link set, your opening hours are right, and your menu and photos are current. The booking link can point straight at your own booking page — no commission. Google's built-in "Reserve" button is only available through Google-approved booking partners, so for most independent restaurants, the link is the practical route.

Which Option Should You Choose?

  • New restaurant, nobody knows you yet: a platform for discovery, plus your own booking page from day one so repeat guests move to it.
  • Established restaurant with regulars on LINE: a LINE booking app plus a website booking page, both on the same system.
  • Delivery-heavy business: keep GrabFood and LINE MAN for delivery; move reservations onto your own system. We explain why in LINE OA booking vs delivery-app commission.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best online booking system for a restaurant in Bangkok?

There isn't one best system — there is a best fit. Booking platforms bring discovery but usually charge per booking or per guest. Your own website booking costs a one-time build and keeps the customer relationship. A LINE booking app suits Bangkok restaurants whose regulars already message them on LINE. Many restaurants combine a platform for discovery with their own LINE/website booking for repeat guests.

Do I need a restaurant booking app that customers download?

Almost never. Guests rarely install an app to book one table. In Thailand the 'app' that works is a LINE LIFF mini-app: it opens inside LINE from your Official Account, so there is nothing to install and the guest is already identified.

How do restaurants reduce no-shows with online booking?

Automatic reminders sent to the guest's LINE the day before and a few hours before, a one-tap cancel link so people release tables instead of ghosting, and — for large tables or peak nights — a PromptPay deposit taken at booking time.

Can guests book my restaurant directly from Google Maps?

Your Google Business Profile can carry a booking link that sends people straight to your own booking page, and that is the simple, commission-free option. Google's built-in Reserve with Google button only works through Google-approved booking partners.

How much does a restaurant booking system cost?

A restaurant website with LINE booking, an admin dashboard and automatic notifications falls in our Lead System tier, from ฿50,000 one-time, with no per-booking commission. Typical timelines are two to four weeks.
